If you suffer from Psoriasis, Eczema, Dermatitis or Vitiligo then UV Phototherapy carried out in the comfort of your own home may be the answer.

What is UV Phototherapy? UV Phototherapy is simply exposing the human body to UV (Ultra Violet) light.

What is Ultra Violet Light? UV light is part of the light spectrum emitted by the sun. Below is a diagram that shows the light spectrum & the bands it is divided into. You will notice that the Ultra Violet band is broken into three catorgories. UVC, UVB & UVA.

Note - None of our machines emit UVC

Whats the difference between UVA, UVB & UVC? This is discussed in more detail further on, however the simple answer is, that each category has a different effect on the human skin.

What UV rays am I exposed to when I go out in the sun? Mainly UVA, a little UVB & no UVC. This is because the earths atmosphere acts as a natural filter, filtering out all of the UVC, & most of the UVB. Air pollution also filters out some of the UV rays before they reach the earths surface.

Is there any difference between UV light produced by a solarium & the UV light produced by the sun? No they are exactly the same, however, in the suns case the UVB content is more intense in the summer than in the winter, it varies with weather conditions, it's more intense at midday than in the morning or late afternoon, as well as being more intense at high altitudes and near the equator. Where as with the solarium the UVB content is much more reliable, remaining constant.

How do I know UV Phototherapy will work for me? You should consult your dermatologist for professional advice but a simple test is how your skin disorder reacts when you go out into natural sunlight. If you find that it improves after a few sessions on the beach or simply working in the garden on a sunny day, then UV Phototherapy will work for you.

WIDE BAND UVB - Wide Band or Broad Band UVB phototherapy has been a standard therapy in hospitals and clinics since its invention at the Mayo Clinic in the 1920s. Just like natural sunlight, Wide Band is a combination of both UVA & UVB rays, but mainly UVA. However our machines emit approximately twice to three times the amount of UVB rays than natural sunlight. This makes them ideal for treating Psoriasis, Eczema, Dermatitis or Vitiligo. UVB improves skin diseases because the immune cells of the skin, overactive in many skin diseases, are shut down by exposure to UVB. So the higher dose gives you better & faster result than natural sunlight. However, excessive exposure may cause a erythemic response, (sun burning) & premature aging of the skin as well as increasing the risk of skin cancer. So it is important to consult your dermatologist first for advice as to whether this treatment is best for your skin condition. Studies have proven that Wide Band UVB treatment is around 83% successful.

Wide Band UVB is also used by the serious & experienced tanners who already have a good tan & want to take it to the next level.

What about skin cancers? The risk for psoriasis patients on a life long UVB treatment will probably be of the same order of magnitude as for outdoor workers. In comparison with other every day risks, the risk of dying from a skin cancer seems to be negligible. Regular check-ups by a dermatologist can reduce this risk close to zero. It would be unethical to say there is absolutely no risk of skin cancer. Most treatments today have some form of side effect, even the common aspirin and pain killers can have drastic affects such as causing liver damage, although very rare. The possibility of side effects are minimized by following the recommended guidelines. The possible side effects need to be considered before undertaking any form of treatment. There are several independent documents available that discuss cancer involved with UV exposure. Furthermore, skin cancers can appear any place on the body, even the soles of the feet and arm pits that have obviously not been exposed to UV rays, therefore it is highly likely that some people are simply predisposed to skin cancer.
